Understanding Your Australian Pay Slip

2025–26 Income Tax Rates (Residents)

Medicare Levy

Most Australian residents pay a 2% Medicare levy on top of income tax. Low-income earners may be exempt or pay a reduced rate. Some people with private hospital cover may be exempt from the Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) if they earn over $93,000.

Superannuation (2025–26)

The Superannuation Guarantee rate is 11.5% in 2025–26, increasing to 12% from 1 July 2025. Whether super is included in or on top of your salary depends on your employment contract — always confirm with your employer.

HECS-HELP Repayments

If you have a HECS-HELP debt, repayments are automatically deducted from your pay by your employer once your income exceeds the minimum repayment threshold (currently $54,435 in 2025–26). Repayment rates range from 1% to 10% depending on income.

Calculations are based on 2025–26 ATO rates and are estimates only. Individual tax positions may differ based on offsets, deductions and other factors. Not tax advice — consult a registered tax agent for your specific situation.
